Is tyohar ka parchlan Sadiyo purana bataya gaya hai. Is din Bahne apne bhai ki kalayi pr Rakhi bandhti hai aur Bhai apni Bhaen ki hr ko uske har Sukh-Dukh me sath rahne and Humesha uski Raksha ka vachan (Promise) dekr apna snehbhav darshate hai.
रक्षा बंधन का उल्लेख हमारी पौराणिक कथाओं व महाभारत में मिलता है और इसके अतिरिक्त इसकी ऐतिहासिक व साहित्यिक महत्ता भी उल्लेखनीय है।

Jis din Yeh Raksha Sutra Indar ki Kalai pr bandha gaya tha us din Sravan Sukl Poornima (श्रावण शुक्ल पूर्णिमा ) isiliye yeh Parv Aaj-Tak Sravan Sukl Poornima (श्रावण शुक्ल पूर्णिमा ) / Sravan Maas ki Poornima (श्रावण मास की पूर्णिमा ) ko Manaya Jata Hai.

100 Yagya pure kar lene par Danvendra Raja Bali ke man me Swarg Prapti / Swarg pr Raj krne ki Ichcha Balvati / Jagrat ho gayi to Usne ne Apne Yagya-Tap ki Sakti se Swarg pr Aakrman / Hamla kr diya Aur Sabhi Devtao ko Parast kr diya Aur Indra ka Singhasan Dolne laga To Indra sahit sabhi Devta Bhagwan Vishnu ki Saran ( शरण ) me chale gaye aur Raja Bali se apni Raksha ki prarthna krne lage. Tab Bagwan Vishnu ne Vaman Avtar lekar Brahman ka Vesh dharan kr liya Aur Raja Bali se Bhiksha mangne pahuch gaye. Unhone Bali se Teen 3 pag Bhumi / Zameen Daan / Bhiksha me mang li. Raja Bali ne Unhe Teen 3 Pag Bhumi Daan me dene ka Vachan de diya.
Bali ke Guru Sukradev (शुक्रदेव) ne Brahman Roop Dharan kiye huye Vishnu ko pahchan liya. Aur Bali ko Is baare me Savdhan kr diya. Lekin Danavendra Raja Bali apne vachan par Adig rahe Aur Teen Pag Bhumi Daan kr di.
Tabhi Bhagwan Vishnu ne Vaman roop Dharan kiya. Aur Vaman Roopi Vishnu Bhagwan ne Apne Ek Pag me Swarg aur Dusre me Prathvi (Earth) ko naap liya. Aur Bali se puch ki apna teesra pair kaha rakhe ? Bali ke samne Samasya utpann ho gayi. Yadi Vo apna Vachan na nibhata to ye Adharm hota. Akhirkar usne Apna Sir Bhagwan ke aage kar diya Aur kaha Teesra Pag aap mere Sir pr rakh deejiye. Bhagwan Vishnu ne aisa hi kiya aur pair rakhte hi Raja Bali Rasatal lok me pahuch gaye. Jab Bali Rasatal me chale gaye to Rasatal me Bali Bhagwan Vishnu ko Prasann krke Unse vachan le lete hai ki Bhagwan Vishnu Rat-Din Unke samne rahenge Aur Bhagwan Vishnu ko Unka Dwarpal banna pada. Bhagwan ke Rasatal Nivas se pareshan Laxmi Ji ne Socha ki Yadi Bhagwan is tarah Rasatal me Dwarpal bankr Nivas karenge to Baikunth Lok (बैकुंठ लोक) ka kya hoga. Is Samasya ke Samadhan ke liye Devarshi Narad Ji ne Laxmi Ji ko ek upay Sujhaya, ki Aap Raja Bali ko apna Bhai banakr Unki Kalayi par Raksha Sutra bandhiye. Narad Ji ki Salah ke Anusar Mata Laxmi ne Raja Bali ko RakshaSutra Bandha aur Uphar me Bhagwan Vishnu ko mangkar unhe Apne sath Baikunth Lok le Aayi. Sanyog (संयोग) se Us Din bhi Sravan Maas ki Poornima (श्रावण मास की पूर्णिमा ) hi thi.
आज भी सभी धार्मिक अनुष्ठानों में यजमान को ब्राह्मण एक मंत्र पढकर रक्षासूत्र बाँधते हैं जिसका अर्थ होता है कि-
"येन बद्धोबली राजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबल: ।
दानवेन्द्रो मा चल मा चल ।।"
इस मंत्र का भावार्थ है कि दानवों के महाबली राजा बलि जिससे बांधे गए थे, उसी से तुम्हें बांधता हूँ। हे रक्षे! (रक्षासूत्र) तुम चलायमान न हो, चलायमान न हो।

Rakhi Pyar aur Vachan ka Tyohar hai Isiliye Ravindra Nath Taigore Ji ne Iska Istemal Bhartiya Swatantrta Sangram me Jan Jagran ke Liye kiya tha. Amarnath Yatra bhi isi din puri hoti hai. Yah bhi mana jata hai ki Isi din Himani Shivling bhi Apna Akar Grahan krta hai. Yah tyohar Maharastra me Nariyal Poornima ke Name se bhi jana jata hai. Is din Marathi log Nadi ya Samudra ke Tat (तट) par jakr apne Janeu badalte hain aur Samudra ki Pooja karte hain. Rajasthan me Is din Ramrakhi aur ChoodaRakhi ya Loomba bhi Bandhne ka Rivaj hai. Ramrakhi Keval Bhagwan ko hi bandhi jati hai Jabki Chooda Rakhi Nanade Apni Bhabhiyo ko bandhti hain.
Tamilnadu, Keral, Maharastra aur Udisha ke South Indian Brahman is Parv ko Avni Avittam (अवनि अवित्तम) bhi kahte hain.
